Adidas Enters Metaverse With Bored Ape Yacht Club Ethereum NFT

Adidas is partnering with the Bored Ape Yacht Club, Gmoney, and Punks Comic to enter the metaverse.

The company also bought a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT #8774 and converted it into a metaverse character named Indigo Herz. The character comes complete with Adidas’ trademark tracksuit, and Adidas now uses it as its Twitter avatar.

Adidas purchased the Bored Yacht Club NFT in September for 46 ETH (about $156,000 at the time), according to data from the public Ethereum blockchain via OpenSea.

The company said in a tweet, “This autumn, Adidas, known for celebrating ideas at the bleeding edge of originality, is settling in at the frontier of creativity: The Metaverse. Our goal there? To see every one of its inhabitants thrive. The Metaverse is where anyone can express their most original ideas and be their most authentic selves, in whatever form they might take. And thanks to the blockchain [and NFTs], those pioneers can own a piece of what they create.

“Today we leap into the Metaverse with @BoredApeYC, @gmoneyNFT & @punkscomic. It’s time to enter a world of limitless possibilities”.

The three-way collaboration comes just days after the company announced a partnership with Coinbase. It revealed the purchase of a virtual plot of land in The Sandbox, a blockchain-based virtual game environment “where players can create, own, and monetize their gaming experiences.

Coinbase responded excitedly to Adidas’ announcement on Twitter, promising to meet them in the metaverse.

More than 10,000 NFTs have been minted on the Ethereum blockchain by the Bored Ape Yacht Club. Punks Comic combines the worlds of NFTs and physical comic books to produce crypto comics. Gmoney is a crypto and NFT influencer based in Puerto Rico who has been featured on Fortune NFTy 50.

Adidas is not the only company that has ventured into the virtual world. Balenciaga recently revealed that it would do the same, while Nike – Adidas top rival – is also working on metaverse-related products.
